Mariah:During september 19th 1914 there lived a man named Tipu. Tipu was a Rugby player he really liked playing rugby he even had a nickname called Big George. He wanted to go to war with the Germans but he was too young to go to war.

maori and british.

    • There was about 500 men that left Wellington on the 14 of February
    • 1915. By 1916 the battalion was in desprte

    • in february 1915. Its motto was ‘Te Hokowhitu a Tu (the seventy
    • twice-told warriors of the war god). Some moari had been in
    • gallipoli from the beginning, having enlisted in the provincial
    • infantry battalions.

Mariah.l - There was a flu that killed 9,000 new zealanders. 19,000 New Zealanders also died in the war during 1914-1918. There were 3 more serious flu’s in New Zealand, in 1957-1968 and 2009. Now we have another one in 2019/2020 called (Covid-19) or Coronavirus.16 people died because of (Covid-19).In 2020 we have better living conditions, better ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene (showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of getting a virus because of industrial farming, and international travel.

NZ’s killed by the Flu:9,000 Over a 2 month year period.

Why is the 1918 flu known as Spanish Flu?Because lots of people died there.

Pandemic page 28



Vaccine- are a little bit of the virus that is dead so your body can make antibodies that can fight off the virus.
Zinc Sulphate- a medicine
Formally improved -Approved from the Government 
Medical Benefit- Helping your body fight.
Undoubtedly- probably, definitely 
Spray inhalers - a gas you breathe in through your nose/mouth, think of an asthma inhaler.

benefit/beneficial - mean the same thing 

Mariah - In 1918 there wasn’t any type of vaccines.In these days they would get a spray (Zinc Sulphate gas) and think it would do anything but it did nothing but they would breathe on each one and would still have the flu.They got more of the virus.So the spray did nothing at all.So once the war was finished they  they had a party and had the flu again.

Mariah - The medical was helping soldiers but some of the medical helpers were unqualified to do it.The little kids peeled vegetables to make soup and help to deliver.Volunteer adults made a coffin for the dead soldiers.And a quarter of doctors and medical staff helped the soldiers.

Strain -Type of something

Claiming -Real sickness

Severe -Undesirable

Haemorrhage - when you bleed inside

Pneumonia -You're Filled with fluid

Cyanosis -Skin changes colour.

Fluid - kinda like a water flowing




This flu in 1918 was like the plague because they both go for your lung and then you get less oxygen so your skin changes. The strain was similar to the plague because it changes the skin when they die, the skin changes because the lungs gets flooded with liquid so it is difficult to breathe like the plague but it does not fill up with liquid.
The strain affected ages of 20 to 40 years old.

A virus is a tiny organism that goes through your body.They are three types A, B and C.Anti is the opposite. can change into a new kind of virus. Viruses that come from animals can be dangerous to humans.

People thought the flu came from a roly ship that came from auckland.There thought it came from the ship because the primministet.The flu NZ.The Moari died and the Pakeha died too.They have not had a proper funeral.She was nicknamed "the Titanic of the Pacific", but after the sinking of the real RMS Titanic this was dropped in favour of "Queen of the Pacific.The ship was built to carry mail between Australia and Vancouver (in Canada).

There was a deadly global pandemic flu thriving around the world in 1918. NZ was isolated and surrounded by water. North American soldiers carried the influenza and shared it with the other soldiers.There was a second type of virus that had a death toll over 50 million people
