1939 - 1945

In 1939 Britain and Germany went to war with each other
people. When war started the New Zealand prime minister
Michael Savage said: We are on the side of Britain. Many
were wounded. Some were captured and put in japanese
and German prisoner of war camps. There was no
television so people had to rely on radio and newspapers
for new. Japanese planes and submarines close to New
Zealand.Many people were scared japan would attack.
Schools practised air-raid drills. Houses had blackouts;
they were not allowed to show lights at night.

One evening, maui took gourds of water
and put out every, fire in the pa.In the
morning people were furious with maui.
You stupid said the people.Now you must
go south to the volcano.OK said maui.But
nobody would go with him.His only
friends the birds joined him.

The land was dry and bare.Deep in the
heart of the smoking mountain maui could
see a flicker of flame.

Maui saw an old woman crouched over the
fire.Maui thought the old woman was his
aunty.She was maui aunty.She plucked
one fire for her thumb and gave it to
Maori take good chair of the flame it's is
sacred she said.

Maori dropped the fire he in the water
he wondered what will happen when he
dropped it a little flicker and then it's
disappeared.Auntie can I have some more
of your flames as he complained to his
auntie.

Maori dropped it again in the water and a
little flickr as always and then
disappeared.
For every fire he got he complain and
complain.
I dropped it,the wind blew it out,a birds
scooped it down and took it,it started
raining,
I sneezed and it blew out,I tripped and

out of her clothes.

As he watched the volcano smoking really
hard.He snapped a some little bit of
branches
on the tree.Maui thought the fire might
be in one of them.

A flame pops up when he started rubbing.
